Abaxial

(L., ab-, away from) The side away from the axis; the back surface of a leaf. Compare to adaxial.

Actinomorphic

Radially symmetric flower, with sepals, petals, and stamens radiating from the center of the flower. 

 


Acuminate

(L., acumen, a point) tapering to a long tip (usually of leaf tips)

Acute

(L. acutus, to sharpen) an apex formed by two margins meeting at less than a 90 degree angle; its sides more or less straight; Opposite: obtuse

Adaxial

(L., ad-, toward) The side of an organ facing the axis; the upper side of a leaf. See also, abaxial

Amplexicaul

(L., amplexus, to embrace) When the leaf base or stipules completely encircle the stem by meeting on the other side. 

 


Anther

The pollen-bearing portion of the stamen. 

 


Apex

(L., apex, tip) The tip of a leaf, the point farthest from the base
